Environmental Protection
Friends of Environment and Social Development (FESD) is launching a comprehensive campaign to combat plastic pollution in Lake Kivu and the Rusizi River as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, public health, and community engagement. The initiative focuses on raising awareness about the harmful effects of plastic waste on ecosystems, water quality, and human health while encouraging communities to reduce single-use plastics and adopt eco-friendly alternatives. Through workshops in schools and community centers, media outreach, and the distribution of educational materials, the campaign aims to promote responsible waste practices and sustainable lifestyles.
The program also includes community clean-up drives that mobilize volunteers to collect plastic waste along the shores of Lake Kivu and the Rusizi River, working in partnership with local waste management companies to ensure proper recycling and disposal. In addition, FESD is collaborating with local artisans and entrepreneurs to promote the production and use of biodegradable bags and packaging, while advocating for stronger policies and incentives that support sustainable business practices.
Through these efforts, the campaign seeks to reduce plastic pollution, strengthen public awareness, and build lasting partnerships with local authorities, schools, businesses, and community groups. FESD calls on individuals and organizations to join this initiative and work together toward a cleaner, healthier environment for present and future generations.
